Mother's Day

about

Some friends asked about this one after I played it live, and I didn't have a good recording of this song that I wrote a million years ago, so here's a live practice take recorded on my iPhone, I added a little reverb and processing. (The lyrics "passing time" used to be "thirty-five" but that door has already closed and I'm still waiting... so I changed it.)

lyrics

I take the pills that make my children ghosts I'll never see
And empty packs stacked in the trash remind me that I'm free
So if my body puzzles at my womb's persistent drought
It's not so much a baby-lust as a fear of missing out

Waiting for the wanting
Will it switch on in me like a light?
That ticking clock
That drive
Waiting for the wanting

Marriage is a pitcher plant and the two of us are flies
Sliding down into its throat together, man and wife
Two babies and a house await us
Our parents at the bottom, waving,
"Come on in, the water's fine"

Waiting for the wanting
Will it switch on in me like a light?
That ticking clock
That drive
Waiting for the wanting

And from all the cards on Mother's Day, I know this much is true
That I am worthless to the world
I'm worth less than you
No baby tucked into a car seat
No selfless love, I am no martyr
And yet I have no magnum opus
No masterpiece for me to show you

And sometimes doubts whisper to me, tempting as a snake
Saying that I'm making an irreversible mistake
An emptiness inside of me and I worry that some instinct's hiding
And once the door of passing time has closed, I'll be sorry

Waiting for the wanting
Will it switch on in me like a light?
That ticking clock
That drive
Waiting to want it
