lyrics

One morning you come down to breakfast
And find that your mother's turned into a bear
And as your father picks up his briefcase
His carapace clatters at the back of his chair
You know their voices
You know their eyes
You know the tenderness of their smiles as they tuck you in at night

But her claws rake the table
And her fur reeks of wet earth
Between the bear and your mother
You're no longer sure which one was first
You're no longer sure which one is her

Thirteen lies just around the corner
Smelling of metal and coiled to strike
And in the mirror, your own face seems frightening
Like a mask on a burglar who crept in at night
You know you're changing
New blood, new hair
You know the smell of the trees as they quiver with lust in the wild night air

Now both hands go on holding
The mask that you want for yourself
You try to stay human as the howling surrounds you
Remember the hammer hidden under the felt
Remember the tongue at the heart of the bell

One morning you come down to breakfast
And find that your lover's turned into a goat
Chewing on cans when he thinks you're not looking
But you can taste his musk in the back of your throat
He looks so distant
With those sideways eyes
You know it's just a mask that he's wearing
He can take off those horns when he lies down at night

But his hooves tap on the table
And his beard scratches your cheek
As he says he's more comfortable this way
Night after night, week after week
Night after night, week after week
And now when's the last time that you heard him speak?
He just bleats

Now both hands go on holding
The shape that you want for yourself
You try to stay human as the howling surrounds you
Remember the hammer hidden under the felt
Remember the tongue at the heart of the bell
